⚠️ We are planning to release important security fixes for #Mastodon on February 3rd, between 13:00 and 15:00 UTC.

To make sure that most servers can upgrade swiftly, we will release the fixes both as v3.3.2 and v3.4.6 (they will, of course, be also available on the main branch).

To make sure the upgrades on those older versions require the least intervention, with just a process restart, we have just released preparatory releases v3.3.1 and v3.4.5.

Please upgrade!

Of course it did, and yet it stalled wayyy behind the inflation rate over the past year, and that's not even to say the historic stalling of wages behind inflation for decades causing massive inequality and in-affordability of basic goods:

My server setup has become such a mess. Somehow the network interfaces file got messed up after installing docker, and on restart it stopped connecting to the internet (or even my local network). Took too long to debug. I think it's finally time to splurge on a portable monitor so I don't have to haul my server across the room to my monitor and short HDMI cables.

Just discovered getgrist.com/. I have been on the hunt for an open-source alternative to Airtable that can also be self-hosted. So far I have tried out baserow.io, but it greatly lacks in features (veryy limited field types) and programmability.

Checked out some templates on the Grist website and it looks a lot more promising! Going to try it out on their website (it's completely free for personal use) since they provide a migration path for your data on to a personal instance.

Was following the discussion on DDB engineering practices and code quality on HN. The reality of software engineering is that it's all about tradeoffs. It's not like in the open-source world or your hobby projects when you don't have any deadlines. Deadlines are almost always mis-estimated (even when done by engineers and not managers), and you always end up making tradeoffs and lots of "we'll fix this later".

The real challenge is balancing when to move forward and when to take a step back.

Have had my instagram account disabled for some time now. Going to try out installing @pixelfed on dispersio.us and see how the experience is.

As with all decentralized networks, the biggest challenge to solve is the network effect.

A great quick note on distractions and how it can affect productivity and the quality of the work we produce:

Yes, some people are getting underpaid. But how the market is now, you should be exploiting and getting better offers elsewhere, but that also requires work.

TL;DR: Be self-critical, advocate for yourself.

Complaining about peanuts pay from working in Tech in the US? Seeing this trend increasingly these days on platforms like blind and internal work channels. It's very self-rightous-y. A lot of the people are just performing worse than their peers, and that affects pay. Instead of complaining about your pay, invest in improving your performance. 1/2

Remember when Israel did the same to start a genocide in Palestine? No? I remember. And I remember US backing it. And I remember the genocide still being continued today.
